Hagyard's highly regarded veterinary medical specialists are recognized as leaders in the horse industry for their state-of-the-art diagnostics, critical care skills, and acute or chronic disease or injury recovery expertise. This full-service hospital operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with services that include ICU and neonatal ICU, an infectious disease unit, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and a full diagnostic laboratory.
McGee Medicine Center specializes in the critical care and treatment of horses suffering from acute or chronic disease, injury, and provides long-term surgery recovery services in its post-surgical care unit. Its emergency care team is ready to spring into action 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Each year, this center sees over 2,500 medicine and critical care cases, of which more than 200 are critically ill newborn foals. Cases treated include a full spectrum of diseases, from cardiac disorder, respiratory, autoimmune, gastro-intestinal, and dermatologic conditions, to laminitis, neurological, and ophthalmologic diseases. All breeds have occupied its 56 stall facility from Thoroughbreds to Arabians, Miniature horses to Belgian Draft horses and elite show horses. Over a dozen turn-out paddocks are available for use during the patient's recovery. The Center's intensive care unit is a dedicated 14-stall wing reserved for the critically ill or for compromised foals and their dams. Procedures, medications, and treatments are constantly updated under the expert direction of board-certified internists and critical care specialists. Continuing education for the staff is part of the ongoing process to provide the very best in medical care for the horses of the Bluegrass and for those shipped in from other locations to this state-of-the-art facility. Our internal medicine doctors also can bring the quality of care offered in the hospital to your farm by scheduling a farm call visit.
Our Facility
The McGee Medicine Center comprises four separate units: Isolation, Intermediate Care, Intensive Care and an area designed specifically for neurological cases. A patient's visit begins in a procedures area equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and emergency care tools. This includes 4 ultrasound machines, 2 EKG machines, endoscopes, laser and 2 x-ray machines.
Once the patient is admitted as an Inpatient, it is checked in to our computer whiteboard system. This system allows the technicians and doctors not only instant access to the patients’ records and treatment sheet, but also allows us to track patient movement through the hospital. This computerized system allows our staff to be more efficient with patient care.
The McGee 12-stall isolation barn provides patients with the highest quality care and an infectious disease protocol unmatched by other clinics worldwide.
The 14-stall Intensive Care Unit provides a climate controlled environment for critically ill patients. Equipped with two ventilators, the focus is placed on neonatal care; each stall has a direct oxygen feed, outlets for heat lamps, and fans for ventilation. Tempurpedic® mattresses, cotton blankets and pillows are provided for ultimate patient care.
The Intermediate Care facility also provides a temperature-controlled environment and consists of 6 stalls. One of the stalls is equipped with a state-of-the-art ventilation system that can be used for patients with allergic airway diseases or Rhodococcus equine pneumonia.
The McGee Medicine Center's neurological area provides two stalls specifically designed to accommodate neurological or recumbent patients. Equipped with hydraulic lifts, rubber flooring and direct oxygen feeds, these stalls enable the doctor to provide the highest quality of care.
