Discovering your best undergraduate opportunity!
In an effort to build lifelong relationships and cover operational needs during the breeding season, Hagyard Equine Medical Institute has three undergraduate opportunities designed to provide a learning environment in which undergraduate students or graduates of an undergraduate program can expand their general knowledge of equine veterinary medicine.

Medicine Veterinary Assistant Internship
Each year the McGee Medicine Center sees over 2,500 medicine and critical care cases of which more than 300 are critically ill newborn foals. The medicine veterinary assistant will learn from senior technicians that have honed their skills for many years, while assisting 5 internal medicine specialists at this center. Cases frequently admitted during the spring period include: post-foaling complications such as hemorrhaging mares and uterine tears, high risk pregnancies, and various neonatal disorders. The internship is a full-time seasonal position starting approximately in January and finishing in June. Surgery Veterinary Assistant Internship
With more than 6,000 surgical procedures performed each year, Hagyard qualifies as one of the largest equine surgical hospitals in the world. The invaluable experience gained over time readily equates to better medical and surgical results, and has helped to place Hagyard Equine Medical Institute among the best hospitals in North America. This surgical expertise is complemented at the center by a broad range of diagnostics, such as scintigraphy, digital radiology, ultrasound, and MRI. The surgery veterinary assistant will learn from senior veterinary assistants while assisting 6 surgeons. Their primary role will be to provide assistance and support to surgeons, veterinary interns, and surgery staff by holding and restraining patients for examination, treatment, procedures, and x-ray. The internship is a full-time seasonal position starting approximately in January and finishing in June. Ambulatory Veterinary Assistant Internship
Hagyard Field Care doctors are a group of experienced ambulatory equine practitioners who provide highly personalized client service to area horse farms. The ambulatory veterinary assistant will provide assistance and support to the doctor in the delivery of primary care and diagnostic services. The primary caseload revolves around breeding and foaling thoroughbred mares. The ambulatory veterinary assistant will observe reproductive and general medicine work, done in the field. The internship is a full-time seasonal position starting approximately in January and finishing in June. For further information regarding responsibilities during the internship and qualifications, click here.

The medicine, surgery and ambulatory veterinary assistant internships require a full-time commitment and are compensated.  Internship applications are due on October 1 and should include a letter of intent and resume.  Applications must be e-mailed to Jamie O’Flynn, Internship Program Coordinator, at joflynn@hagyard.com.
