Fellowship Opportunities
Hagyard Equine Medical Institute's fellowship program offered from January to June primarily involves working at the McGee Medicine Center under the direct supervision of six ACVIM board-certified internists. With a caseload of over 2,500 patients annually, the McGee Medicine Center provides an unparalleled, specialized learning opportunity for fellows who desire to focus on the many challenging aspects of internal medicine.
Primary goals of the fellowship are to satisfy prerequisites for entry into a residency-training program or to enable the participant to practice veterinary medicine with an increased depth of experience.
The fellow will be expected to share in both the daily elective and emergency duties involving the equine caseload under the supervision of a boarded internist.
The objectives of the fellowship are to allow the participant the opportunity to gain knowledge on ultrasonography, critical patient care, fluid therapy, and endoscopic procedures all under the direct supervision of an internist.
Cases frequently admitted during the spring period include: post-foaling complications (hemorrhaging mares, uterine tears); high risk pregnancies and various neonatal disorders.
Minimum qualifications include graduation from a college of veterinary medicine. Qualified applicants are invited to submit (by September 1 of each year) a letter stating professional interest and career goals, curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation. A medicine externship is required for all applicants.
