Externship Opportunities

The Hagyard Equine Medical Institute externship program provides students the opportunity to gain "real-world" experience in a group practice dedicated to caring for some of the most valued equine patients in the world. the program design allows students to choose from a wide array of high quality equine veterinary medical services, each one a specialty of the firm.

There are a variety of externships that are offered at the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute:

Externship Areas

Field Care Externship

The student will observe our primary field veterinarians and experience services ranging from reproduction, radiology, and herd health to acupuncture and chiropractic medicine. You must have transportation if you choose to participate in this externship. Available February - May. Limited spaces available in January, September, and November.

Medicine Externship

This externship allows for the student to observe doctors at the McGee Medicine Center, including our renowned critical care unit and infectious disease center. Available from January - July. Limited spaces available from August - December.

Radiology Externship

This externship allows the student to observe our board certified radiologist in the field and at the Davidson Surgery Center. The student will experience a mixed species case load. Available January - November. Limited spaces available in August and September.

Rotating Externship

This externship allows the student to visit all departments in the Institute, depending upon space availability.

Sport Horse Externship

The student will be exposed to sport horse management with particular emphasis on lameness diagnostics and treatment. Time will be spent at area sport horse stables, as well as at horse shows. Available mid April - November.

Surgery Externship

The student will observe a variety of surgery procedures within the Davidson Surgery Center, in addition to nuclear scintigraphy, digital radiography and high speed treadmill evaluations. Available January - June and September - November.

Theriogenology Externship

The student will ride with one of our reproduction specialists and observe assisted fertility and infertility services provided in the field and at the McGee Fertility Center. Available from January - July.

Prerequisites for Externship

  1. Primary professional interest in equine veterinary medicine
  2. Third or fourth year veterinary student or graduate veterinarian
  3. Transportation to and from the institute

Externship Dates and Durations

We strongly encourage externships to be scheduled between the months of February and May to allow a broader learning experience.

  1. Minimum of one week not to exceed one month.
  2. More externships offered during the months of February - May.

Living Quarters

Limited housing accommodations are available at the clinic. If no housing is available, housing is the responsibility of the extern. A list of possible housing opportunities and contact names will be provided.
