Internships & Fellowships

Internships Overview

Our internship program currently consists of two, ‘hands-on’ approaches to managing clients and patient care. Depending on their intended area of practice, post-graduate veterinarians can apply for a field care or surgery internship. Regardless, both programs will sharpen their skills alongside Hagyard veterinarians providing state-of-the-art care to patients across central Kentucky.

Internships

Field Care Internship

Our field care internship is a one-year program requiring employment from veterinarians from July through June of the following year. Veterinarians participating in this internship will rotate through our field care service, internal medicine and fertility center, and surgery center from October through December. The remainder of their year will primarily consist of field care responsibilities including emergency duties; with or without a senior practitioner alongside them. Due to the large volume of horses treated at our practice, this is an intense and diverse experience. During this internship, interns are often housed on or near some of Kentucky’s most spectacular breeding farms.

Surgery Internship

Our surgery internship is offered in both a one-year program requiring employment through July
through June of the following year, and a seventeen-month program requiring employment
from February to June of the following year. Veterinarians participating in the internship display a sincere interest in pursuing surgical residency programs. The majority of this internship will be
spent within the Davidson Surgery Center. Interns will perform daily patient assessments, treatment, nuclear scintigraphy, anesthesia, digital radiology, magnetic resonance imaging, as well as lameness and performance evaluations.
